About RRSP & TFSA Contribution Room Calculator

RRSP & TFSA Contribution Room Calculator works out how much you can actually put into Canada’s two main tax-shelters, which is harder than it sounds because they accrue room in completely different ways. RRSP room is 18% of the previous year’s earned income capped at the annual dollar limit, reduced by any pension adjustment from an employer plan, plus every dollar of unused room carried forward from prior years. TFSA room is cumulative from the year you turned 18 or from 2009, whichever is later, so it depends on your birth year and requires the full history of annual limits — which the tool includes back to the programme’s launch. Enter your details and it returns available RRSP room, lifetime TFSA room, and TFSA room still available after contributions and prior-year withdrawals, plus an over-contribution warning since TFSA penalties accrue monthly.

Key Features

  • Birth-Year TFSA Calculation

Sums every annual TFSA limit from the year you turned 18, using the full history since 2009. A single current-year limit tells you almost nothing.

  • Complete TFSA Limit History

Every annual dollar limit the programme has had, viewable in a table filtered to your own eligibility years.

  • RRSP Pension Adjustment

Subtracts the pension adjustment from an employer plan, which is what makes many people’s actual RRSP room far lower than 18% of income.

  • Carry-Forward Support

Adds unused room from prior years, since RRSP room never expires and often dominates the current-year figure.

  • Withdrawal Room Restoration

Adds back prior-year TFSA withdrawals, which return to your room the following January — a rule that trips up many contributors.

  • Over-Contribution Warning

Flags when contributions exceed lifetime TFSA room, since the penalty tax accrues monthly on the excess.

How to Use

  1. 1

    Enter your earned income

Use last year’s earned income, since RRSP room accrues based on the prior year.

  2. 2

    Add carry-forward and pension adjustment

Both are on your CRA Notice of Assessment. The pension adjustment reduces room; carry-forward increases it.

  3. 3

    Enter your birth year

This determines the first year you were eligible for a TFSA and therefore your total lifetime room.

  4. 4

    Enter TFSA contributions and withdrawals

Total contributed to date, plus anything withdrawn in a prior year which has since returned to your room.

  5. 5

    Read both room figures

Check RRSP room available and TFSA room available, and open the limit history table if you want to verify the total.

Real-World Use Cases

Contribution Deadline Planning

Someone approaching the RRSP deadline works out their maximum deductible contribution including carry-forward.

TFSA Catch-Up

A saver who never used their TFSA discovers how much cumulative room has built up since they turned 18.

Over-Contribution Check

A contributor who re-deposited a withdrawal too early confirms whether they are over their lifetime room and facing penalties.
