About UK Student Loan Repayment Calculator

UK Student Loan Repayment Calculator works out what you repay each month and, more importantly, whether the balance will ever clear. Repayments are 9% of income above your plan threshold — 6% for postgraduate loans — so they behave more like a graduate tax than a conventional loan. Enter your salary and plan to get the annual and monthly repayment, the amount of income above threshold, and what share of your salary the repayment represents. Add your balance, the loan interest rate and expected salary growth and the tool projects year by year: interest accrues, repayments are applied, and it reports either the year the balance clears or the amount written off at the end of the repayment period. For many Plan 2 borrowers interest exceeds repayments for years, and seeing that projection is the point.

Key Features

  • All Four Plan Types

Plan 1, Plan 2, Plan 4 and postgraduate loans, each with its own threshold and repayment percentage.

  • Income Above Threshold

Shows the portion of salary repayments are actually charged on, which makes the graduate-tax structure obvious.

  • Year-by-Year Projection

Tracks salary growth, interest accrual, repayment and balance for every year up to write-off.

  • Write-Off Detection

Reports the amount written off if the balance does not clear, rather than pretending every loan gets repaid in full.

  • Share of Salary

Repayment as a percentage of gross salary, useful when comparing job offers at different salary levels.

  • Adjustable Interest Rate

Plan 2 interest is RPI-linked and varies, so the rate is an input rather than a hardcoded assumption.

How to Use

  1. 1

    Enter your salary

Use gross annual salary. Repayments are calculated on income above your plan threshold only.

  2. 2

    Select your plan

Plan 1 for pre-2012 loans, Plan 2 for post-2012, Plan 4 for Scottish loans, postgraduate for master’s and doctoral loans.

  3. 3

Enter your balance and interest rate

Take both from your Student Loans Company account. Plan 2 interest is RPI-linked and changes annually.

  4. 4

    Set expected salary growth

Repayments rise with salary, so growth strongly affects whether the balance clears.

  5. 5

    Check the projection

Read the year the balance clears, or the amount written off if it does not.

Real-World Use Cases

Overpayment Decision

A graduate checks whether their balance would ever clear before deciding to make voluntary overpayments.

Salary Negotiation Context

Someone weighing a pay rise sees how much of it goes to student loan repayment, so the real gain is clear.

Mortgage Affordability Prep

A first-time buyer identifies their monthly repayment figure before a lender counts it against their borrowing capacity.
